Is it easy to change your family name in Jordan?
Before bashing me
You don’t have to change yours
I am talking about myself
and other people who would like to change theirs
as I know how much people in this country are pround of their family names
They build their identity..
Their safety..
Their relationships with others..
Their job potential..
Values…
For instance, if you want to call Batir
You say Wardam
and if you want to call Pheras
You say Hilal
and if you want to call Naseem
You say Tarawnah
They used to call me Zaghmout at school!
Based on my famiy name
Sometimes Zagnoot or Zaghloot or Sakhmout!
o those who hated me they said Sharmoot! :S
And I have always fought to set them clear
that my name is FADI!
and that my identity isn’t derived from my family name
Not because I am better than those people who derive their identity from their family names
but because (I hate to admit it)
My family name is quite weird
(how would I put it in a delicate way?)
and not so nice
and hard to spell
and is close in definition to za’3noot
as of very tiny!
My grandmother told me that my grand grand grand father used to have a small finger in his hand
that is why they called him zaghmout!
But why the hell I have to be connected to that old long forgotten man with the small finger?!?!
I mean, it isn’t like he bore thousands of children whom dominated this area of land!
The only Zaghameet left in Jordan are me, my father, and brothers!
(along with some few others)
But seriously, can’t I just change my last name?
I want to derive it from my own name
like fawaydeh for instance
Fadi Fawaydeh
Cool name, don’t you think so?
and my children would inherit it
for instance Faris Fadi Fawaydeh!
Perfect!
and my grand grand children would always carry my name
and refer to their greatest grand father
(which is me if you didn’t follow what I have been saying)
and then I would be starting Al Fawaydeh tribe
and I would encourage my children to procreate
Procreate, procreate, procreate
till we expand in numbers
till we become more than Al Abbadeyye
Natasha don’t get upset with me – I know that we would never reach your numbers!
But I seriously envy you!
I don’t have such tribal support!
But I will get it with Al fawaydeh
I give you my word!
