Jaha in the Metaverse

A futuristic light and funny short story that imagines the first traditional Jordanian Jaha taking place in a metaverse.
“Jaha” is a traditional ceremony used to formally ask for a girl’s hand in marriage. The chief/elder/guardian of one tribe/family approaches the chief/elder/guardian of another to request the hand of a girl in marriage. The women, including the bride, are not allowed to attend.
Jaha in the metaverse got translated to the Italian Language by Roberta Loi, and published in Arabilioso, a collection of Arabic Sci-fi short stories curated by Future Fiction Publishers in May 2024. The English Version, Arabilious got released in July 2024.

لا أحب الأمور الغريبة وأبتعد عن كلّ ما هو مجنون وغير تقليدي. أُتقن التّحكّم بجسدي وتحريك عضلاتي لأُظهر ما أراه مناسباً من وقار وحياء حسب ما يقتضيه الموقف وتطلبه الحاجة. إلاّ أنّ عضلة واحدة طالما أعجزتني، تعاندني كلّما سنحت لها الفرصة وتأبى أن تطاوعني، مصرّة على هدر الجهود التّي أبذلها في رسم صورة جميلة عن نفسي. ورغم محاولاتي السّابقة في ترويضها واعتقادي الساذج بنجاحي، إلاّ أنّها خانتني في لحظة خاطفة سقطت فيها دفاعاتي. انقلبت عليّ وفرضت سيطرتها بشكل كامل يوم وقع بصري على سعيد النّضوة. فلتت زمام أمورها وهاجت وماجت تتخبّط في مكانها كالمجنونة بين انقباض وانبساط كما لم أرها سابقاً، وكأنّها فقدت عقلها مثلما فقدته أنا.
A word from the translator
“Una jaha nel metaverso” was probably the funniest short story to translate in the entire collection “Arabilioso”. Yet even here, Fadi demonstrates his talent for dealing with important issues with irony: in this case, traditions, along with a chauvinist mindset that is difficult to eradicate even in a hyper-technological society such as the one shown in the story.

It’s Just a Kiss

What happens when child becomes parent? Novelist Fadi Zaghmout’s short story explores divorce, social conventions and a dysfunctional mother daughter relationship on the brink of implosion.
I developed this short story as part of my MA Dissertation at Sussex University. I explored in the critical part of the dissertation the relationship between a dominant father figure and death drive. A psychoanalysis read for two novels: The Kite Runner by Khaled Husseini and When We were Orphans by Kazuo Ishiguro. Then I reflected my findings gender wise and developed this short story.
