The bright side of homosexuality in Jordan

The general stand on homosexuality and its moral aspects from a religious/belief point of view is onething, and trying to build on people’s moral emotions by a bad journalist and an out-dated homophobic doctor is a totally another thing.

Journalism and Medicine are two dangerous important fields that affect people’s lifes closely. When a daily newspaper as Al Ghad publishes an article that doesn’t differenciate between a homosexual, transexual and a prostitute, and generalize in a way that is far away from truth, one would really wonder about the professionalism of our media and the how much we can rely on such newspapers for a credible news?

Is it good that homosexuality helps us realize how professional are our journalists?

It is even more dangerous when you apply it to Medicine. People’s lives are in the line here. There should be no room for corruption in the medical field. People like the claimed Dr. Abed Al Hameed Al Qudah should be accountable for what they say.

For a guy who has a PH.D degree from the UK as he stated in his research, and one who is specialized in infectus diseases (I have no idea how that give him credibility to talk about homosexualiy) and is holding a position as the manager of the specialized labs in Irbid, the expectations of professionality and credibility should be high.

But then again, reading through comprehensive research one would immediatly realize that the guy is backing scientific methods in treating homosexuality that has been discredited in the scientific community more than 30 years ago!

What measures do we have in Jordan to ensure that doctors follow the latest medical findings? Is there something one can do when he goes to a doctor that applies a dangerous outdated treatement on him that causes him more harm than good? Is it the time where the government should be asked to come up with more regulations and survaillance over the medical field to ensure a higher level of professionalism? Isn’t that more important to us -the Jordanian citizens- than following effiminate men in the streets?!

Is it good that homosexuality helps us realize how professional are our doctors?

It is time to stand up for the truth and don’t let some unprofessional people build on our emotions to succeed in a louzy work. Be clear about your morals, but be clear as well about following your work ethical guidlines, for us the Jordanian citizens are not naive anymore, the internet is full of information.

  1. Why are you denying this person his right to state his mind? He has a position towards homosexuality that you disagree with. That doesn’t give you the right to brand him a homophobe. In fact, there’s nothing wrong in rejecting a specific interpretation of anything. It doesn’t automatically give us the right to just think that people are homophobes, backward and have no shred of knowledge in an area. The research appears to have a lot of ideas in it. His approach might have been discredited by some but not all doctors.Basing on this specific study, you can’t write a drive by statement like <>“Is it good that homosexuality helps us realize how professional are our doctors?”<>.A sign of civility and modernism is to actually accept other opinions, and if you’re qualified enough, refute itHomosexuality is disgusting to me, but this doesn’t mean that I don’t respect other people’s rights in dining whatever it is that they do. Just like I feel about people eating live worms. So let’s try to objective about this matter. The guy has a study, and you, with all due respect, are not qualified enough to respond. His research vs your opinion… sorry but his research wins.

  2. The Boston Globe published an article on February 7, 1999 which was reprinted by permission in the April 1999 NARTH Bulletin. It is an important article because it contributes to the growing body of evidence that homosexuality is not simply “genetic.” Serious scientists have long known that a simply “genetic” cause for homosexuality was highly unlikely, but the mass media conveyed the misimpression of genetic causation to the general public. In the Globe article, prominent researchers admit the distinct limitations of the “born that way” theory. “Gay gene” researcher Dean Hamer comments, “It is the same for every human behavior–environment matters for extroversion, smoking cigarettes, just about anything you can name.”Interestingly, Dr. Hamer–himself a gay man–adds that science remains “just as clueless” as ever about the environmental influences on homosexuality. Dr. Hamer’s statement is consistent with a position taken by most gay advocates, who flatly deny the existence of evidence that points to certain family and social influences on homosexuality. (Gay advocates almost invariably either say “I was born that way,” or “How I became gay doesn’t matter.”) Only prominent gay writer Andrew Sullivan has publicly given credence to the Freudian model of homosexual development.

  3. Al-Qudah, with all respect to his well-earned degrees, is not a doctor. He’s a microbiologist. He doesn’t see patients. He doesn’t make a diagnosis himself and he definitely does not prescribe treatment for patients. It troubles me when I see scientists making up opinions. They should be reporting facts and facts only and let the public form opinions based on these facts. I’m specializing in infectious diseases, and the way it’s connected to homsexuality is that a big bunch of our patients especially HIV positive ones and those with sexually-transmitted diseases are homosexuals, and an infectious-disease physician has to be somewhat gay-friendly otherwise you’ll be hating all of your patients.

  4. It is funny when someone like you talk about a scientist like Dr. Abed Al Hameed Al Qudah.Whether you like it or not “homosexual, transsexual, queers, fags, gays, fucked up people” are all different names for the same thing, they all describe similar behavior but with different levels of “adapting”. I mean transsexual are just gays who went too far.

  5. Qwaider, with all due respect, it is not my opinion against his research, it is his research against latest scientific stand of the largest and highest credited psychological association in the USA with 148,000 professioanl member. His so called research is internet based at least, and is a collective of out-dated theories and assumptions. Then you can’t have a scientific presumed research with quotes from un-credited ahadeeth calling for killing homosexuals. That is homophobic to me. When someone connect homosexuality with jews and when someone categorize the whole homosexuals of the world under a special race he called Lot’s people, then it is beyond homophobia and beyond insanity.

  6. dr. dear hamer, actually there is still no real understandment of the cause of homosexuality, whether it is genetic based or environmental construct, it doesn’t matter, and it is beyond the scope of this discussion. hareega, that is a well sound finding, but the reasoning behind it is not in the homosexuality itself. We all know how sexual diseases get transmitted. The more you have sexual encounters with strangers the more chance of getting more diseases. Homosexuals in general do break the social constructs of a controlled sexual life because their sexuality is out of the norm in itself, and thus they would be lift with no boundaries. When societies embrace them, things would be even.anonymous, you are just as ignorant in this issue as the writer of the Al Ghad article. It is a good practice to start from wickipedia. Check gender, gender identity and sexual orientation. 3 different things that comes in a spectrum in nature and results in people having different attributes (maybe this is just beyond your brain comprehension, but you can at least try to understand, no?)

  13. FYI:http://www.aglp.org/pages/cfactsheets.html#Anchor-Gay-14210From the link:“Is Homosexuality A Mental Disorder? No. All major professional mental health organizations have gone on record to affirm that homosexuality is not a mental disorder. In 1973 the American Psychiatric Association’s Board of Trustees removed homosexuality from its official diagnostic manual, The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Second Edition (DSM II). The action was taken following a review of the scientific literature and consultation with experts in the field. The experts found that homosexuality does not meet the criteria to be considered a mental illness.”It seems as though this microbiologist is forming his opinion using ignorance instead of actually evidence. What is more shocking is that the Arab media is even giving him a chance to be heard! Again, this points to a prevalent inability on the part of physicians and the media of the Arab World for presenting unbiased facts. It’s shocking at this day and age but I suppose I shouldn’t be considering how backward some Arabs can be.I like how the physician in question blames Jews for homosexuality. It seems like Jews are the scapegoat for any problems that are considered subversive. However, I’m sure the Israelis themselves would blame the Arabs too if they could!

  14. What fascinates me how the West are using all their efforts to fight homophobia this day, and as Madame Mansour mentioned how homosexuality was no longer considered a mental illness in the 1970’s since a decade earlier HIV was called “gay disease” and a cure for homosexuality was sought out for.Why am I mentioning this? Homophobia originated in the Western cultures and especially during the earlier Abrahamic religions but most specifically with the political rise of the Crusaders.I currently can’t recall any historic references or journals, but as far as I know, homosexuality was never considered a large taboo since there was a state of “sexual liberation” where practices or sexualities were not things to be taken into consideration to define your person. Men were warned about attractive boys, Abu Nuwas flaunted his love for men.
